our best farmhouse style decor inspiration for your home

Farmhouse style is all the buzz these days in the decor world. More importantly it is a beloved and growing trend with real people, not just designers and trend setters. Why all the popularity? Because anyone and everyone can achieve it. It is not difficult, and it’s not expensive. How great is that? Not only is it easily attainable but in this fast-paced, high-tech world is brings us back to our roots. It reminds us of a simpler time and gives us a feeling of being connected to the land and this country’s history.

Farmhouse style combines vintage and antiques in a new way that makes old seem new again. The trend of antiquing and junking is making a huge comeback either in response or as a cause. Either way you look at it this trend is hot, and we LOVE it. Whether you actually live on a farm or you live in an urban setting you can enjoy the old-fashioned charm that is the hallmark of this style.

Elements of Farmhouse Style

A Few Favorite Farmhouse Materials:

  1. Galvanized Metal: used in anything, this metal gives anything a “farmhouse” feel, stools, chairs, lights, signs, buckets, olive buckets, trays, fans, tubs, planters, watering cans, and so much more.
  2. Iron Stone: this heavy duty old world china is sought after as much for its durability as its charm.
  3. Wood: natural, chippy or worn wood is a hallmark of farmhouse.
  4. Wrought Iron anything.

Some Favorite Farmhouse Fabrics:

  1. Grain Sack: a true farmhouse feel, more rustic, used in pillows, table runners, napkins, poufs, and more.
  2. Linen: more elegant and classic, used in pillows, bedding, table linens and more.
  3. Lace: added as detail in any of the above and adds a real vintage charm, old-world feel.

Mixing farmhouse style is fun and easy

The Fun of Farmhouse Style is in the Mix

Jodie and I are the great “mixers.” Being Geminis (and twins) could have something to do with this strong trait of ours. But we are also practical girls. We like to make use of what we have. Life’s too short to live by strict rules and get too fussy. We like to have fun with our décor. It’s all about the mix.

A few short years ago Jodie was in a mostly Pottery Barn safe world when it came to decor. And I moved into a classic home from a very modern one. We were both looking for a new decor direction. Along came Instagram, and we both fell in love with the fresh look of Farmhouse decor.

Did we throw away all we owned? No way. We actually got rid of very little. But we started swapping out decor and adding new farmhouse elements. Jodie and I want to share with you some key resources we love and key elements to embrace this beloved style.

Our Favorite Sign Maker

If you are familiar at all with farmhouse style you know that farmhouse signs are a key component. While they can come in all different sizes, shapes, and styles and we appreciate many, we do have one preferred sign maker who has made many signs for both Jodie and me. Her name is Eszter Szabo, and she is the owner of  Camellia Cottage Decor. Not only does Eszter create wonderful signs to add the sweetest farmhouse mood to any room but she can and will make any custom sign you dream up.

Every time we receive a new sign of hers the beauty in person just blows us away and pictures don’t do them justice. Quality and attention to detail make them each a thing of beauty we are proud to display.

Eszter is truly passionate about what she creates. She absolutely loves what she does. She currently offers 64 different hand-made items and adds more all the time. We are so happy to be able to offer our followers a 10% savings coupon code for a limited time to Camellia Cottage Decor. Use TWINS10 at checkout.

Authentic French Antiques: A Great Way to Express Farmhouse Style

Farmhouse style is viewed as a uniquely American style. But America, being created from a population of immigrants naturally incorporates other cultures. Therefore, it is not surprising that there are strong influences of both French and English country mixed in. We see this in many elements, none stronger than the love of authentic French antiques.

There is nothing more charming than real antiques mixed in, no matter what your style. They create authenticity, history, real character and a connection to our past. That is one reason we have become HUGE fans of a fabulous curator of French antiques and products, Charlotte of Vivi et Margot (named after Charlotte’s two daughters).

Charlotte has renovated one 150-year-old French country home and is in the process of renovating a second. In her time spent in France she became a lover, a collector, and finally a purveyor of authentic French antiques. Her eye for choosing just the right pieces is impeccable. Belief in a simpler life, quality over quantity, beauty in the details, these principles guide Charlotte and her special shop.

Rustic looking lanterns on each side of long wood tray. I love style of lanterns.
    Thank you Brenda

    • jjdesigntwins says:

      Hi Brenda,
I wish I had a source for you, but I never did. I bought these years ago from a local boutique, and I never knew the brand or anything. I don’t think they are “found items” but still no source. I’m sorry about that.
      Best, Julie
