How to Create A Fresh Budget-Friendly Outdoor Oasis

This year Julie and I are working with Better Homes & Gardens at Walmart as part of their BHG Live Better Influencer Network, so we couldn’t wait to check out their selections for our spring spruce up! Every spring we cannot wait to start applying our design skills to our outdoor spaces!   Here is how I created a fresh budget-friendly outdoor oasis using fabulous finds from Better Homes & Gardens available exclusively at Walmart.  To view more decorating ideas for your outdoor spaces from the BHG Live Better Influencer Network just click HERE.

I have to admit, my family is pretty spoiled here in Northern California with our easy winters and our early springtime weather. It is our rainy season, but even that is a treat because it is our greenest time of year. That’s why every spring we like to get a jump on our outdoor decorating.  As many of you know I am on a very tight budget, but that doesn’t stop me from doing my best with fresh pillows and inexpensive accents to make my outdoor spaces as inviting as possible.

Shopping for My Budget-Friendly Outdoor Oasis

Heading to Walmart I had my budget in the forefront of my mind, imagining pillows, pots and plants, and perhaps a new umbrella. I was so excited to find a large selection of all of the above. Not only did I find every color to choose from but so happy to find stylish selections and amazing quality. Honestly, Julie and I are so impressed and happy to be able to share the products we have found because they meet all our standards for price, style & quality. There’s no reason to pay more!

I was so excited about the pillow choices (you know me and pillows) that I called Julie from the aisle in Walmart. “Oh my gosh, Jules! You should see the choices!” Literally I was like a kid in a candy store. My backyard seating was going to look brand new with these awesome pillows. I was happy dancing in the aisle while Julie laughed on the other end.

Next, I found this perfect go-with-everything, on-trend black and white stripe cabana umbrella. With so many colors on the agenda already black and white was the ideal choice to go with it all. The umbrella would shade us from the heat in the summer and design-wise it would really frame the space. This was exactly what my budget-friendly outdoor oasis was craving.

A Budget-Friendly Outdoor Oasis:  It’s All in the Details

There is power in the details. No matter what your budget you can freshen any space by focusing on the details. When creating an outdoor oasis think about things like:

  • pillows
  • cushions
  • rugs
  • plants
  • cute pots
  • decorative plant stands
  • lanterns
  • string lights
  • umbrellas

The Better Homes & Gardens brand at Walmart has ALL these items in abundant supply, so it really can be your One Stop Shop!  You can always find Better Homes & Gardens products in Walmart stores, but there is also an extended and vast assortment of products online at www.walmart.com/bhg. You’ll find more styles, colors and sizes just a click away. Jules and I like to shop both ways to make sure we are getting the full selection. Plus, if you’re anything like us sometimes you’re in the mood to browse the aisles and sometimes you’re in the mood to shop in your pj’s 🙂

I love these farmhouse planters and my new wicker bench. Now my space feels so cozy and inviting.

Affordable Outdoor Furniture

Because of budget constraints I was assuming that I would not be able to afford any new furniture for my budget-friendly outdoor oasis.  But since I had received the Better Homes & Gardens at Walmart outdoor catalog I was enticed to look at the furniture in person (just to see 🙂  And I’m so glad I did. Once again I was amazed at the quality. What really blew me away were the affordable prices! Now my wheels were turning. What wasn’t possible in my mind all of a sudden was possible. I could actually afford to create something I’ve always wanted:  a sitting area in my front yard!

Because our back yard isn’t yet landscaped and doesn’t have any grass my boys always play in the front yard. Due to our small budget I didn’t think about adding furniture to the front.  I couldn’t believe I found a quality love seat that is handwoven, all-weather wicker, stylish, and comes with a 3-year warranty all for UNDER $100!!  That’s less than it costs to replace pillows at most stores. I was like, “Sold!”

I set it up in the front yard and sat down to watch my boys playing soccer. Honestly I got a little teary-eyed. It felt like a dream come true. Now maybe you think I sound silly, but if you had seen their faces you might have cried too!

From Rags to Rags: My Story of Hope

I started my IG story in the midst of my family’s financial crisis. While the situation is better we are still operating in survival mode. We don’t have enough money to go out and buy big items or landscape our backyard and are careful with our purchases. We bought our home almost 10 years ago and while the interior of the home was newly refinished the backyard was just dirt. There were big plans for the backyard, and we were getting ready to make it the backyard of our dreams when my husband lost his job.

If you have been following me on Instagram and reading our blog for a while you may already know some of my story. It is not a rags to riches story.  In fact, it is a rags to rags story.  That being said, my story is one of triumph and hope. I share openly to encourage others. My financial situation does not define me. My journey of finding happiness in spite of my financial struggles has inspired many people. I know I am not alone with these challenges, and my goal is to help others understand they are not alone.

If you are interested in reading more about my story read, The Truth Behind the Pretty Pictures of Instagram.  While the path has not been an easy one our story is one of perseverance and finding purpose and joy amidst struggle.

I’m not a frequent commenter on blogs – although I love and read many. I often relate to the stories told but when it comes time to comment I freeze and feel unable to adequately express myself. So I move on in frustration. This year it’s my goal to step out in confidence and move beyond embarrassment and self-consciousness. So here goes … I’m grateful to you for sharing your story so openly. I know it is source of comfort and encouragement to those experiencing financial and other set backs. While I’m fortunate to be blessed with financial stability – right now – my husband and I have experienced the panic of being over-extended during a financial downturn and the very real fear of job loss and inability to meet our obligations. We watched with sadness as friends and family members lost jobs. Reading or watching the economic news left us in a state of dread. We sobered up financially and were fortunate to make it through the downturn without either of us losing our jobs. Over time, as the economy improved, and we began to feel more confident, I left my job and we took on an expensive home renovation. Then my husband lost his job. Once again we were fortunate and he was back to work within a few months. But the experience was sobering and I’ll never forget the feelings of shock, fear and if truth be told, embarrassment. Over time I learned to be grateful for these experiences and to consider the difference between want and need when evaluating new purchases. With so many wonderful blogs presenting gorgeous photos of lovely homes and beautiful clothes it can be tempting to try and spend our way into the imagined lifestyles behind the beautiful images. I hope to enjoy the wonders of social media by using it as inspiration to rethink, reimagine, repurpose, and restyle what I already own. And, then to make new purchases, inspired by my blog and Instagram friends, wisely and without impulse. Thank you for being brave and honest and encouraging us to strive to find the beauty in our lives regardless of challenging circumstances.

Every experience, no matter how challenging, can be worthwhile if we use it to grow and learn. Thank you again. With gratitude, Julie & Jodie
