Hot New Decor Trends: My Loft Restyle

These pictures speak for themselves. Can you see how gorgeous this furniture is from where you’re sitting? I hope so. My entire loft restyle consists of furniture from England Furniture Co. I had heard great things about their lasting quality and had seen some of their beautiful pieces in friend’s homes. I had great expectations, but I am still blown away by the beauty of my new furniture. Insert happy dancing all day long.

When it was time for me to redecorate my loft England Furniture was at the top of my list. Luckily England Furniture is sold nation-wide, so it was just a matter of my finding a retailer close to me.

I went to a local family-owned retailer in Everett, WA, Erickson Furniture, where I was able to learn more and test out a huge variety of furniture choices. If you are in the Seattle area the folks at Erickson are amazing. Five generations have created a family tradition of excellence in service and quality since 1912. I loved meeting them and getting to know the folks there.

Why England Furniture

For me, choosing England Furniture came down to quality and style choice. They offer some of the best warranties in the business: lifetime limited frame warranty, 10 year limited cushion warranty and five year limited warranty on moving parts. When investing in furniture, quality construction comes with confident warranties.

Another important aspect for me was the fact that England Furniture (a division of Lazyboy Company) is proudly made in the USA and has been for 50 years. As far as style, England Furniture has literally hundreds of fabrics and dozens of styles to choose from. My pieces were custom made for me. I couldn’t believe how quickly my furniture was made and delivered to my door.

Hot New Decor Trends

Some amazing hot new decor trends that influenced my design choices for this room are:

  1. Pattern in design
  2. Accent Walls
  3. Farmhouse elements
  4. Transitional style

I want to show you how I incorporated each of these trends into my room restyle and how you can easily translate them to work in your home.

Pattern in Design

Among the hot new decor trends is the use of pattern in design. As you can see, for my new loft I went with a bold patterned fabric for my chairs. It was a brave move on my part. I held my breath for a moment as I confirmed my custom order.

As with anything, the greater the risk the greater the potential is for reward. I’m convinced that this room restyle was successful due mainly to my “brave” choice with these chairs. At this juncture, I need to give Jodie some props. She totally held my hand and encouraged this decision. Thanks Jodes.

To make pattern work in this room I was careful to include plenty of non-patterned surfaces where the eye can rest. Pattern needs to be balanced in order to work best. The two sofas in the room are both one solid color. I originally had more patterned pillows on the back wall window bench, but I returned them. It was too much for the eye. Again, Jodie weighed in her expert opinion, showcasing her “bossy twin” status.

I added another pattern with the rug and love how the buffalo check of the chairs plays against the transitional floral style. Some of you may remember that this rug came from my dining room, so yes, sometimes I just get lucky.

Hot New Decor Trends: Embracing Pattern in Design

There are many ways you can embrace this powerful trend. If you are shy with pattern you can easily “dip your toe in the water” by adding pattern with smaller, less expensive elements. Once you gain confidence you can start choosing bigger investment pieces. Play with pattern using the following elements:

  • throw pillows
  • a throw blanket
  • rugs
  • wall decor
  • furniture

Accent Walls

Accent walls are another example of how the design world is having a love affair with pattern. Why do we love accent walls? Let us count the ways. First of all, an accent wall is easy to achieve. You are only addressing one wall which automatically means 1/4 of the work (and a fraction of the expense). Next, you aren’t likely to overwhelm a space. You can go bold and create a big statement, while still allowing the rest of the room to breathe. Limiting your bold statement to a fraction of the space provides a safe balance to a room.

Hot New Decor Trends: Paint Accent Walls

There are many options for creating an awesome accent wall depending on the affect you want to achieve, the level of wow, and the time/budget constraints. The first level of all of the above is paint. Everyone can afford paint. There are no special skills needed to paint a wall. Paint is also the first level of “wow.”

Wallpaper Accent Walls

Another popular choice for accent walls includes wallpaper, which we LOVE. The wallpaper choices available today are incredible. This is a pricier option than paint and requires a bit of skill, but if you ask Jodie and me, it’s totally worth it. One wall of wallpaper can elevate a room’s style quotient exponentially. To more fully explore wallpaper ideas be sure to read our recent blog post How to Embrace Wallpaper.

Wood Accent Walls

Finally, we love the hot new decor trend of wood accent walls. there are plenty of awesome products to choose from these days. If you are a DIY guy or gal you’ll enjoy the chance to put your skills to work. Options are endless, whether you choose a peel and stick option or fabulous authentic barn wood or something in between. Let your creativity shine as you create your own wood wall. It will be a conversation starter for sure.

Hot New Decor Trends: Farmhouse Elements

Another hot new decor trend is farmhouse elements. I’m not sure if we can still call it new, but it is a trend that continues to gain momentum and shows no signs of slowing down. Examples of this style include mixing authentic antiques or vintage-inspired elements. Farmhouse style uses rustic woods, chippy paint finishes, galvanized metal burlap, grainsack, and anything old-world.

The best part about this trend is that you can easily mix farmhouse elements into your current design aesthetic. You don’t have to proclaim your style “farmhouse” to have fun incorporating bits of farmhouse flare into your rooms. In fact, with so many retailers jumping on board this hot new decor trend you’ll find plenty of choices and inexpensive options to sprinkle new details into your home without breaking the bank.

Some of the retailers embracing farmhouse style are Hobby Lobby, Target, West Elm, Pottery Barn, and Walmart. Jodie and I regularly list our favorite finds in our blog shop. Check back often, as we update our shop weekly.

Transitional Style

The definition of “transitional style” is just what you’d imagine from the title. It’s a popular style trend that incorporates many styles in one. Transitional style blends old and new, classic and modern for a fun, fresh appeal. It is the “new” style that almost defies definition.  It’s no longer necessary to stick to one aesthetic or to be definable in traditional terms. Design rules are taking a step back, and we are now freer to create our own definition of style.

If you have trouble defining your decor style, guess what. You’re on trend. Isn’t that a relief? Pick and choose what you like, make things up as you go along, and feel free to dapple in a potpourri of styles. It’s not only acceptable it’s considered on trend and artistic. Who wants a cookie cutter house? Not us. This new freedom of expression is a welcome change to the elitest days of the past when only those with a design degree were considered “worthy” to create enviable decor.

      Holliday,
We love to hear that you enjoy the blue plaid. It was the best decision. Sometimes you need to be brave 🙂 Jodie literally held my hand. I knew I loved it but how would it look in the room. This is custom furniture…you’re not taking it back! But together we were brave and they make the room. It’s such a great example of nothing ventured nothing gained. Sometimes you need to risk! lessons for life, yes? With gratitude, Julie & Jodie

  2. Laura says:

Which local Furniture Store did you purchase your Parson Coffee Table from? I have been looking for that one since I saw it in HGTV Magazine.

    • jjdesigntwins says:

Hi Laura, Well it was a custom order from England Furniture to Erickson Furniture Store in Everett, WA. I don’t know if they always carry it, but they can most likely order it for you. I’m not 100% sure of what their inventory is or will be, but if you are in the Seattle area, definitely check with them. I link Erickson’s website in the blog post. If that doesn’t work contact England and find out directly from them. Good luck, Julie
